Rosstulla School, Newtownabbey

Nursery

Rosstulla Nursery was established in September 2020. We cater for pupils in their pre-school year. We currently have one morning class. Our morning class commences at 9.00 am and finishes at 11.30 am.

Our classes are supported by one teacher and three learning support assistants.

In Nursery, our emphasis is on helping the pupils settle into school life and encourage them to build relationships with both peers and staff.

Pupils learn to follow the routines and structures of the classroom and school life. We follow the NI Pre school curricular guidance at a pace suitable for each individual child. More information on the curriculum can be found here - https://ccea.org.uk/downloads/docs/ccea-asset/Curriculum/Curricular%20Guidance%20for%20Pre-School%20Education.pdf

In everything we do, we foster the pupils communication skills. Staff use Makaton to help aid communication. Most importantly, overall we have GREAT FUN!

A typical Nursery session involves helping pupils to …

  • develop physical and sensory processing/regulating skills by completing sensory circuits
  • learn to focus for attention autism sessions
  • enjoy messy play/sensory play
  • learn to listen to stories/songs and rhymes
  • enjoy snack time
  • have fun with outside play
  • relax and chill in our sensory room
  • take part in tasks which help with concentration and focus e.g. attention building activities like puzzles, matching boards etc.

In Nursery and throughout our school, we really believe in the importance of working alongside parents. Staff spend time establishing relationships with the parents and families of pupils.

This year, we are participating in the Getting Ready to Learn Programme which encourages schools and parents/families to work together to help pupils learn. We are looking forward to working with our parents on this exciting project. More information on this programme can be found here - https://gettingreadytolearn.co.uk/
